When Venezuela needed us: Scouts worldwide mobilise to support earthquake recovery

Venezuela

On 24 June, two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude struck central Venezuela just seconds apart. According to official figures from the Venezuelan government on 3 July, 2,645 people lost their lives and 12,666 were injured. The World Health Organization also reported that close to 16,000 people were left without homes, while thousands remain missing. Together, these figures highlight one of the most devastating disasters to affect the country in more than a century.

In response, Scouts around the world acted quickly. Within days, National Scout Organizations (NSOs) in different regions launched fundraising campaigns in their own countries, while many others helped promote the regional appeal. NSO headquarters and local premises became collection points for donations, and hundreds of Scouts volunteered in their communities to collect essential supplies and raise support. Across the Movement, solidarity was quickly transformed into action.

The earthquakes have significantly affected communities across Venezuela, with recovery expected to continue for several years as families rebuild their homes and lives, and communities restore essential services.

Support from NSOs, volunteers, and donors around the world remains continues to play an important role in these efforts.
