Hope After the Storm: The Philippine Scouts' Relief for Typhoon Survivors

3 minutes
Typhoon Gaemi, locally named Carina, and Tropical Depression Butchoy have triggered intense rainfall across Central Luzon and Metropolitan Manila in the Philippines. The situation has worsened the destruction already caused by the southwest monsoon, resulting in widespread flooding with water reaching chest-deep levels. The heavy rainfall also prompted the opening of floodgates at the Ipo and Binga dams in Central and Northern Luzon, further contributing to the flooding. As the rains continued and the flood levels kept rising, houses were submerged, sweeping away furniture, appliances, clothes, school supplies, and other necessities.

According from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, over 393,000 people (101,500 families) have been affected across 11 regions. In Metropolitan Manila, the hardest-hit cities were Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela and Marikina. Over 86,000 people have been evacuated in these areas, with many evacuees returning to their homes as some of the flooding subsided.

With its mantra “Laging Handa”, which translates to “Always Ready”, the Boys Scouts of the Philippines launched "Hope After the Storm: The Philippines Scouts' Relief for Typhoon Survivors”. This initiative aims to raise USD 5,000 to provide immediate assistance to affected families, school-aged children, and Scouts in parts of Central Luzon and Metropolitan Manila.

This urgent donation drive seeks to bring immediate relief and support to thousands of displaced Scouts, their families, and other community members across Central Luzon. The National Scout Organisation is appealing to the Scout community to join hands in this vital relief effort. The "Hope After the Storm" initiative will focus on collecting donations to provide essential food packs, grocery items, hygiene kits, and school supplies to those in need.

The Boy Scouts of the Philippines also aims to support children return to school as soon as possible. Many students in flood-affected regions have had their school supplies damaged, making it difficult for them to start the new academic year next week. This initiative will focus on replacing the damaged supplies for Scouts and students in the hardest-hit areas. The Boy Scouts of the Philippines also has several uniforms they can distribute to provide additional support to returning students.

How you can help:
  • Donate: Every contribution - no matter how small - will directly impact the people and communities affected by the floods. Your donation will go towards providing essential supplies and preventing the outbreak of disease.

  • Spread the word: Share the fundraising campaign with your friends, family, and networks. The more people who know, the greater our collective impact.

  • Advocate: Encourage your local Scout groups to join the cause. Together, we can amplify our efforts and reach even more people in need.
