Scouts Saving Lives Through Blood Donation in Botswana.

In response to a national call to citizens by the Botswanan Ministry of Health to help replenish the national blood bank, the Botswana Scout Association last year mobilised 53 Scouts from around the capital Gaborone. The Scouts marched into the country’s largest national referral hospital, Princess Marina Hospital to donate blood. They were among other citizens who heeded to the Ministry of Health’s call to support patient’s improve response to treatment hence increasing their chances of healing.

“This activity taught us that it is vital for us to assist our fellow citizens whenever we are called upon. Community service always brings great recognition to Scouting and the nation, so as Scouts we ought to be ready to help,” said one of the Scouts, Bakang Kenosi.

Through this selfless gesture the Scouts were able to save lives of their fellow countrymen and women, many of whom they would even never get to meet. It also provided them an opportunity to be identified by other citizens as people of good deeds. The gesture caught the attention of the media who invited Scout representatives to Radio Talk Shows to highlight the work of Scouting in the country, further arousing the interest of other young people in the movement.

Since 2018, the Scouts in partnership with the Ministry of Health have continued to conduct an annual Blood Donation Drive on the 27th of February  to help save more lives.
