A Milestone for Adults in Scouting in Maldives
23 June, Male’, Maldives – Today is the launch of the four-day Adults in Scouting workshop at the Maldives Centre for Social Education in Male’ with nearly 30 participants. The workshop aims to improve the management of volunteer adults, which has been constantly emphasized to enhance the effectiveness of the Scout association. This is also to fulfill the recommendations arising from the Scout Association’s national strategic plan and from the Committee NSO visit (CNV) in 2009.
Various Commissioners and Unit leaders from 12 Atolls and from the capital Male’ are participants in this workshop being directed by the National Commissioner for Adult Resources, Mohamed Ibrahim.
The President of the Scout Council Arif Rasheed officially opened the workshop and said, “this workshop is timely as there has been a long felt need to strengthen the management of adults of the association”. He underscored the true nature of volunteerism in scouting and the challenges faced in the school based scouting system, particularly in making scouting a truly recognized co-curricular activity. He called upon the leaders to play an effective role in providing an attractive youth programme to make Scouting updated and relevant. Scouting in Maldives started in 1956 and was registered as an NGO in 1981. It became a WOSM member in 1990 at the World Scout Conference in Paris.
In the remarks of
Regional Director Abdullah Rasheed, he stressed on the importance of formulating a national adults in scouting policy. Ahmed Ali Maniku, member of APR Scouting Profile Sub-Committee and former Chief Commissioner and Council member from Maldives Girl Guide Association Ms. Sausan Lutify, a representative of the Maldives Scout and Guide Fellowship ( MSGF ) are joining the workshop as observers.
The workshop is organized by the Asia Pacific Regional Office co-ordinated by the Director for Adult Resources Thian Hiong Boon. Other volunteer staff include Deputy Chief Commissioner Ibrahim Zameer and former Commissioner Mohamed Khalid.
This workshop reintroduces the World Policy on Adults in Scouting adopted at the Brazil World Scout Conference. Since the World Adult Resources Policy was launched in 1993, 17 NSOs had developed their national Adults in Scouting Policy while four others are in the process of having one.
