Scouting: A Global Platform for Leadership, SDGs and Social Action

3 minutes

Scouting has played a crucial role in developing leadership and teamwork skills in youth around the world. Beyond being a space for adventure and outdoor learning, Scouting has become a global platform for social action and the promotion of the Sustainable Development Goals. Through initiatives such as Scouts for the SDGs, youth around the world are leading community projects that positively impact their environment and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Leadership is not just about leading; it is about inspiring, motivating, listening and supporting. In Scouting, youth take on roles of responsibility that allow them to actively practice these skills. By leading teams and participating in community projects, Scouts not only build their confidence and self-esteem, but also develop deep empathy, teamwork, and commitment to their communities.

Scouts together after leadership training

A recent example of this impact was the Leadership Adventure in Olmué, Chile, where more than 70 young people gathered for a leadership-themed camp inspired by a pirates of the Caribbean theme. For three days, participants formed crews and worked in teams to overcome strategic challenges, attend plenary sessions and participated in different debates. These spaces fostered communication, project planning and leadership, all in the context of Scouts for the SDGs.

"For me, it meant a lot to be able to reconnect with some people and meet many others, I learned a lot about different topics and I really feel that many of my skills (either as a leader or a person) grew enormously, I discovered skills that I did not know I had. A thoroughly recommended experience for anyone."

Scouts in a leadership activity

Scouting offers a unique environment in which youth can explore and develop key leadership and teamwork skills. Through practical experiences, they are ready to make decisions, overcome challenges and live the values of service and responsibility in their daily lives. These learnings not only mark their experience in the Movement, but also provide them with valuable tools for life. If your National Scout Organization is looking to strengthen leadership training, you can request the support of WOSM Services to organize specialized training.
