The Scouts of Brazil began an unprecedented expedition this Tuesday, February 14th. For the first time in the institution’s history, a team of three volunteer sailors from the Scout Movement will sail along the Brazilian coast in a vessel donated by the Federal Courts and the Brazilian Navy. The expedition will leave the Brazilian Naval Base in Natal, RN, with a final destination of the port of Paranaguá, on the coast of the state of Paraná, where it will be based.
The vessel is a 51-foot sailboat that was seized by the Federal Police in 2021. At that time, the Scouts of Brazil, with the support of the Navy, began negotiations with the Federal Courts and the Federal Public Ministry for donation of the sailboat Lamia, which was officially bestowed upon the Scouts of Brazil last Tuesday, February 7, with the presence Captain Carlos Macedo, commander of the Natal Naval Base.
The transfer, for now temporary, should soon become definitive. It represents the realization of a long-standing project of the institution that aims to offer children, adolescents, and young people an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the maritime world in a sailboat school.
However, before reaching its base port in Paraná, the vessel still has a long route along the Brazilian coast, passing alongside Paraíba, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo.
According to Marco Antônio Bortoli, the expedition's coordinator, navigation to the port of Paranaguá may take up to 30 days, depending on the climate and time frame. He says, "During our stops, we intend to promote a moment of visitation on the sailboat for local Scouts, whether young people or adults. This cruise along Brazil’s coast is something unprecedented for the Scouts of Brazil and we would like everyone to feel, in some way, like they are part of it”.
The Sea Scouts has existed in Brazilian Scouting since 1921. It is characterized by an emphasis on performing water activities, seeking to develop a taste in young people for nautical life, marine arts and techniques, sailing and motor navigation, nautical voyages and transportation, fishing, the study of oceanography, and performing nautical and underwater sports, among other things.
