Thai Scouts pilot Patrimonito badge in Sukhothai

Scouts in Thailand are taking a lead role in the conservation of the historic city of Sukhothai, a masterpiece of Siamese architecture, which has been a World Heritage site since 1991.

A total of 27 Scouts in two groups were involved in a pilot project of the World Scout – UNESCO World Heritage Recognition Programme (Patrimonito Scout Badge) in 2016 and 2018, and recently received both the Scouts of the World Award and Patrimonito badges.

The Scouts worked in the Ram Khamheang area of the city, helping to raise awareness among the local community about the historic importance of Sukhothai and encouraging residents to take part in sustainable conservation. Scouts also carried out maintenance activities such as the restoration and modernisation of the grand hall in Ram Khamheang. They also improved the facilities by installing electricity and a toilet system, including two toilet blocks.

Sukhothai in the northern part of modern day Thailand is considered a masterpiece of the first Kingdom of Siam, where ancient traditions and other influences combined to develop a distinctive architectural language known as “Sukhothai Style”. The political and administrative capital of the Kingdom in the 13th and 15th centuries, the World Heritage site is also renowned for its innovations, with contemporary hydraulic engineers modifying the landscape to build reservoirs, ponds and canals and provide sustainable water supplies not only for the area’s residents, but also for economic and spiritual purposes. A city moat also ensured security for the residents.

The Patrimonito Badge is designed to help Scouts conserve World Heritage and recognise its importance. The Scouts who took part in the Sukhothai project said they were proud to be involved in efforts to renovate some of the old city and build links with the local community.

The project was supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the provincial educational office, local shops and the Sukhothai Rover College.
