The Scout Movement expresses its solidarity with the victims of terrorism

September, 2004

Innocent victims have been sacrificed to violence, terrorism and war in the Ossetia region of Russia. This event tragically involved hundreds of innocent children, young girls and boys, women and men. Every act of war and terrorism which affects children and adolescents, is to be considered an act against all of humanity, its future and hope.

The World Scout Committee of the World Scout Organization of the Scout Movement expresses its solidarity with all the families of the victims and to all the people in Russia.

With its over 28 million members, the World Scout Movement is actively present in 215 countries and territories. Through its educational programmes, the Scout Movement is committed to invite new generations of women and men to solve conflicts without use of violence, in peace and tolerance.

Scouting considers all children and adolescents - of any nationality, culture or religion - humans whose rights, dignity and integrity must be universally guaranteed and protected, especially during violent and armed conflicts.

The World Organization of the Scout Movement reaffirms the values which are at the basis of its action and identity as a youth Movement for peace. It invites all its member organizations:

- to strengthen their commitment for peace education,

- to ensure that the ideals of the Movement are known and diffused in all social and political contexts, with special emphasis on those involving youth,

- to reaffirm their condemnation of all acts of violence and terrorism which involve children and/or adolescents in any part of the planet.
