Hello, The situation in France I think is quite different from that in the United States. Contextualization therefore seems necessary
Indeed, in France, there are nearly 80 associations Scout. At major educational developments (transition to coeducation, change of ages ...) disgruntled founded their own movement.
The two main groups are the Association of Scouts and Guides of France and the Association of Guides and Scouts of Europe (2 of them, they must represent 95% of the scout ecosystem in France). These two associations are the only ones recognized by the state, imposing a minimum level of training of leaders and allowing them to collect donations. Finally, there are the Scouts and Guides of France which is recognized by the World office of the Scout Movement.
Each of these associations include Scout associations each of the major religions
For example, the Association of Scouts and Guides of France regroups
• Scout et guide de France : 70 000 scouts (Catholique – but youth of other religion could be member)
• Eclaireures et éclaireur de France : 9000 scouts (atheists)
• Eclaireurs unionistes de France : 5000 scouts (Protestant)
• Eclaireur et Eclaireuse judaiste de France : 4000 scouts (Jewish)
• Scouts Musulman de France : 4000 scouts (Muslim) I hope the context is clear, I will now try to answer your question more specifically speaking Scouts and Guides of France, the movement that I know best (if you also want information on the association of guides and Scouts from Europe, I could develop by email, I was there for 3 years also leader). There are so many different in France Scout associations allowing everyone to choose the combination that suits them according to their choice (religion, coeducation, age ...) so their is no “restriction” In pedagogy Scouts and Guides Frances, there 6 axes
• Relation to self  Mean be a trusted person and have the courage to speak in public
• Relation to others / friends  Mean be good with family and friends
• Relationship to the world  Mean curiosity and try to be a citizen of the world
• Relation to the body  Mean make sport and try to keep a good health
• Relation to emotions  Mean be able to express his emotions
• Spirituality (and not religion) However in France, even if there is more than the state religion since 1906, the Catholicism remains the dominant religion, and Scouts and Guides France is a Catholic movement open to all. Therefore, spiritual time that places each day during the camps or each meetings are based on the Catholic religion. The spiritual time can take different forms:
• A time of prayer
• A religious time when a passage of the Bible is studied, the life of a saint ...
• A spiritual time where we reflected a value from a religious text or not
•... The time and form of this spiritual time depending on the age of the youth, the educational project and even his own faith. With Rangers (14/17 years old) for example for a camp where the majority was Muslim or atheist, I use the time for spiritual form of game every day a presentation of the major religions (Jewish, Christian, Muslim, buddhist) with its history, its relationship with other religion, its place in the world today ... With Cubs in the same situation and telling me bored during Mass, I realized they were bored because they did not understand what was happening. So I directed spiritual time on the course of the Mass (Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the oeucaristie ...). I think that Scouting should accommodate all youth whether gender, age, religion, disability ... This is the leader provide activities for everyone to find their place and flourish following the educational program established in the values of Scouting I hope that answers your questions and remains at your disposal if I was not clear, if you have other questions ... my email address is: cevel_yor@msn.com Kind regards, Benoît Garancher
