Scouts join UNEP International Youth Conference

Scouts from many countries joined other young environmental leaders of the world at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Youth Conference in Leverkusen, Germany from the 27th to 30th August. The participants had the opportunity to share their projects with 150 young people aged between 15 - 24 from 100 countries, showcasing a great variety of projects being lead by young people to tackle the world's environmental challenges.

Under the theme 'Technology in service of the environment' and sponsored by Bayer, the participants were able to learn more about renewable energy production and waste management processes. There were plenary sessions to share approaches to environmental issues such as climate change, or to refine their environmental project proposals. A workshop on climate change and international events was lead by Rod Abson of the World Scout Bureau.

During the event, Scouts presented projects they are involved in, including water conservation activities, tree planting programmes and clean-up campaigns. At the conclusion of the conference, 12 participants were elected to be Youth Advisors to UNEP for a period of two years. Two of these Youth Advisors, Jessie-James L. Marcellones of the Philippines, and Thomas Christian of the USA are both active Scouts.

Scouts with environmental interest are encouraged to apply for future UNEP International Youth Conferences, or for Scouts aged 10 - 14 years they can apply now through their National Scout Organization, for the UNEP International Children's Conference in Stavangar, Norway in June 2008.
