Children in Difficult Circumstances - Special Project: Mission to Africa
All together against poverty!
"Tackling poverty together" is the theme chosen for this year's International Youth Day. According to the 2005 World Youth Report, more than 200 million young people, i.e. 18% of all youth, live on less than a dollar a day and more than 88 million of them are unemployed.
Taking action to reduce poverty in this category of the population is all the more important as young people's development depends on it.
This alarming observation has led to initiatives connected to the Millennium Development Goals. More and more governments are developing national youth policies so as to improve the lives of young people and to involve them in decisions that concern them.
The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) is regularly consulted on the development of these policies both by the United Nations system and by several governments. Moreover, WOSM is directly involved in helping to reduce poverty in the field through numerous projects and programmes around the world. Today, World Scouting has a special thought for people in the Near East where poverty is exacerbated by war.
