April 26, 2006 - Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. On this day in 1986 an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat, Ukraine (formerly a part of the USSR) caused what is known as the worst disaster in the history of nuclear power.

Last Saturday, 18 March 2006 - Ten young Scouts and a Scout Leader were tragically killed in the region of Caldas, Colombia during a freak landslide that was caused by heavy rains in the mountains surrounding their campsite. The regional capital, Manizales, is a popular tourist destination and is nearby the active volcano Nevado del Ruiz, and to where the Scouts were camping when the disaster occurred.
Major (Rtd) Kinuthia Murugu, 44, Regional Director, World Scout Bureau-Africa Regional Office in Nairobi, has been appointed by H. E. Mwai Kibaki, The President of the Republic of Kenya, to the position of Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs of Kenya.

This Friday 7th April 2006 is World Health Day. The objective of World Health Day is to raise global awareness of a specific health theme and highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization (WHO) – with whom World Scouting has held Consultative Status since 1987 and joined in a Memorandum of Understanding in 1997.
