2007 marks the 100th birthday of Scouting, and the use of Brownsea Island is already increasing. Its a beautiful place, little changed from the time Baden-Powell held the world's first Scout camp here.
Can you help the Brownsea Island Campsite?
Scouting's 100th anniversary in 2007 is fast approaching and the interest in Brownsea Island is already increasing.
The island, on the southeast coast of England, is the site of Baden-Powell's experimental camp, held in 1907 for 20 boys. Since this first camp Scouting has grown and world membership now numbers more than 28 million.
The island is a beautiful, natural and unspoilt region, comprising grassy meadows, forestland, a lagoon and beaches. Near the site of Baden-Powell's experimental camp, there is a campsite and cottage which are used by members of the Scout and Guide movements.
There are also two small, old huts for souvenirs and storing equipment. These are badly in need of replacement as soon as possible to protect the environment and better serve campers and visitors.
The island is owned by the National Trust, and one area is available for use by the Scouts and Guides. The Brownsea Island Scout and Guide Management Committee, a registered Charity, began planning several years ago to build a new, environmentally friendly Camp Centre, and plant more trees around the campsite. An architect has already drawn up the plans, and they have been approved by the authorities.
This redevelopment will benefit the Scouts and Guides who visit the site every year, from countries such as Japan, Costa Rica, the United States, Italy and Argentina and of course the United Kingdom.
The new camp centre will provide a new Heritage Museum, an enlarged Trading Post, much better toilets and showers plus equipment store and wet-weather accommodation with easy access for disabled people. It is hoped that the work will be completed by 2007!

Brownsea Reloaded
In the summer of 2005 there will be a unique opportunity for Scouts and Guides to experience 100 years of Scouting through Brownsea Reloaded, a series of special camps on Brownsea Island.
Available to a few hundred Scouts and Guides aged between 14 and 18, the three Brownsea Reloaded events are 48-hour experiences, which include the chance to re-live some of the experiences of the first Scouts 100 years ago.
Brownsea Reloaded isn't just about 1907 - it's also very much about today's Scouting, bringing together Scouts and Guides from across Europe and beyond to share friendship and activities.
