D.R. Congo - a Scout Leader writes thesis on Scouting and peace
BUKAVU - On Saturday 20 September 2008, Jean-Jacques Ba MURHANDIKIRE, the South Kivu Provincial Commissioner, in D.R. CONGO, defended a thesis entitled « Scoutisme dans la sous région des grands lacs africains et éducation à la paix » (Scouting and Peace Education in the African Great Lakes Region). The dissertation explores in a scientific way the experience of the Forum of Great Lakes Scouts (CSGL) and its contribution to peace building in the area.
The thesis, which was directed by a Ph. D. holder in good governance/politics and development studies, was acclaimed as a success and earned a grade of 71%. Upon successful completion of course work on tuesday 23 September 2008, Jean-Jacques has since graduated to the level of Licencié (A0) in Development/Regional Planning. The graduation ceremony took place on Saturday 28 September 2008 at the Institut Supérieur de Développement Rural ISDR, BUKAVU.
Said he, ''This success is not mine but ours because we had to experiment this together and more importantly, we did our best to demonstrate that Scouting (and Guiding since 2005) offers another method of educating by planting the seeds of peace, without which no development is possible. I thank you all for having assisted me directly or indirectly''.
After the examining board comments on the work, Jean-Jacques will be able to avail the report to the general public. This work is a useful addition to Scouting literature ''which is not very abundant in our environment for, we do a lot and write little'', he concluded.
