Cooperation between German and Rwandan Scouts

During the month of January, 2008 the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Horst Köhler, with his wife Eva Luise, visited Rwanda. One of the members of the presidential delegation was Saskia Scholten of the German Saint Goerge Scout Association (DPSG). She spoke about the plans of this Scout association for Rwanda.

She said that DPSG was already financing some projects in Rwanda, and is planning on starting an HIV/Aids sensitization programme for Scouts at Kira Rwanda (a Scout group based at Butare University). Saskia Scholten further noted that plans were also underway to renovate the Scout centre.

On January 6, 2008, during a visit at the Genocide Memorial, the German President was met by the Rwandan Minister of youth, culture and sports Joseph Habineza, the Mayor of Kigali City Aisa Kirabo Kacyira and the Director of the genocide memorial. This visit was part of a 3-day tour to Rwanda by the German President, aimed at strengthening the existing bilateral cooperation between the two countries. He also wanted to assess Rwanda’s progress in terms of economic development.
