Launching of the Scouts of the World Award in Scouts et Guides de France
The castle of Jambville (Training Centre of the “Scouts et Guides de France”) hosted the launching of the Scouts of the World Award in France on October 20-21, an initiative that aims to prepare young adults for world citizenship. Every year, the Scouts and Guides of France support hundreds of international solidarity projects, which now have the opportunity to be part of the Award. Opened to Scouts and non-Scouts from 15 to 26 years, the Scouts of the World Award includes three principal themes which aim to improve living conditions on our planet: Environment, Development and Peace.
Recently, nearly 600 young people from 17 to 25 years (including Rovers from Belgium, United States and Germany) exchanged their experiences on these topics during ten round table events carried out in partnership with NGOs. They in particular discussed the following subjects: "Scouting and the environment", "the international dimension of Scouting" and "the future of Scouting"
A project expo then made it possible for the young people to meet Associations focused on Development, such as the Red Cross, Catholic Delegation for Cooperation, the Catholic Committee Against Hunger and for Development and Secours Catholique. This expo also emphasised the activities undertaken by Scout and Guides Associations developing, of which several have profited from specific partnerships with the Scouts and Guides of France for several years.
A broad pallet of projects carried out by young people
The “Scouts of the World Meeting Days” emphasised the broad spectrum of projects carried out by young people on every continent. The Rovers "Bourg la Reine" thus presented a log book of the activities that they presented to the children of an orphanage in Madagascar. One of the many highlights was the presentation of the report from the project “Potosi Verde”, an exploration into the environmental questions that affect this large town of Bolivia. Lastly, a team of Rovers of Mulhouse shared their experiences lived this summer in Burundi through the project of education to peace “Amahoro Amani”.
For the first time in France, the young people in charge of those projects received the Scouts of the World Award for their contribution on creating a better world.
Vis-a-vis with the problems of the contemporary world, the Scouts have a role to play and the Scouts of the World Award it constitutes one of the answers to this challenge.
