Swiss Scouts get the heads up on recycling

The Swiss National Jamboree 'Contura 08' has taken place in Eastern Switzerland on the Plain de la Linth with 25,145 Scouts participating in the two week event which takes place only every 14 years. This year's location was particularly special, because it was on the border of 3 cantons- St Gallen, Schwyz and Glarus.

Participants had the opportunity to take part in action-packed activities throughout the Jamboree which included a full day's programme in the Global Village. 28 workshops were presented by various NGOs and partners of the Swiss Scout Movement and World Scouting which explored issues relating to education, sustainable development, human rights and environmental protection.

Centenary Overview & Gifts for Peace Report - Now Available

Two exciting documents have been developed following the initiatives undertaken during the Centenary of Scouting in 2007- The Centenary of Scouting Overview and The Gifts for Peace Report .

A CD-ROM containing the Gifts for Peace report (in English and French) and photo exhibition will also be available to NSOs through the Scoutpak.

Polynesia Scouts Council hosts management workshop

Just right after the CSPSA meeting, forum participants were joined by the leaders of Polynesia Scouts Council and took part in the four-day management workshop from 29th July to 1st August 2008.

South Pacific Associations meet in French Polynesia

Seven members of the Council of South Pacific Scout Associations (CSPSA) gathered on 28th July 2008 at the Radisson Hotel, in Papeete, French Polynesia and discussed ways on how to further improve Scouting in their respective countries.

Winston Adams receives the Silver Fox Award from Scouts Canada

Winston Adams of the Africa Regional Office was recently Awarded the Silver Fox Award by Scouts Canada. The ceremony was conducted in Korea during the World Scout Conference that ended on 18 July 2008. The regional executive and Scouter was presented with the top award in Canada's Scouting. The citation on the award reads: ''for services of the most exceptional character to Scouting in the international field"

Oficina Scout Mundial ejecuta proyectos para más de 28.000 personas

La Junta Nacional de Auxilio Escolar y Becas (JUNAEB), organismo público dependiente del Ministerio de Educación de Chile, nuevamente ha reconocido la gestión de Oficina Scout Mundial al entregarle la ejecución de proyectos de desarrollo social que beneficiarán a más de 28.000 niños y jóvenes.

Scouts address global warming

Faced with the reality that global warming is the most important environmental issue today, Scouts across the world gathered at the International Environment Youth Forum from 20th to 21st July 2008 in Tokyo, Japan to address the issue. Scouts Association of Japan hosted the forum.

38th World Scout Conference – Summary

The 38th World Scout Conference was held 14-18 July 2008 on Jeju Island, Korea. It was attended by 1189 participants from 150 countries. Hosted by the Korea Scout Association, The Conference was officially opened opened by Dr. Han Seung-soo, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea.

Aside from the official sessions and workshops, participants had the opportunity to take part in a varied evening programme and an educational tour of Jeju Island on the Wednesday afternoon.

Japan to host 23rd World Scout Jamboree in 2015

11.30am Jeju Island, 17 July 2008 - Japan has just won the bid to host the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in 2015. Announced just a few minutes ago in the Plenary Hall at ICC Jeju on Jeju Island at the 38th World Scout Conference, Japan was ecstatic to hear the results with the Chairman of the bidding committee, Mr. Osamu Hirose saying: We are very happy and we are sure that the Jamboree will be a very good opportunity to educate young people, and also very good chance to show how Scouts around the world are creating a better world.

The Jamboree will be located on Kirarahama or Kirara Beach in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The Japanese word "kirara" means mica: Kirara Beach offers a beautiful landscape in front of which the Seto Inland Sea glitters in the sunlight just like mica.

38th World Scout Conference News

14 July 2008 - The first day of the 38th World Scout Conference on Jeju Island, Korea has been a great success. Hosted by the Korea Scout Association, the World Scout Conference is the governing body, the "general assembly" of Scouting, and is composed of all the members of the Organisation: the National Scout Organizations. This particular triennial event is likely to be the largest, as the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) now consists of 160 member NSOs.

Youth Advisors to World Scout Committee elected in Korea

The participants of the 10th World Scout Youth Forum have marked a historic moment when electing the Youth Advisors to the World Scout Committee for the period 2008 to 2011. From the six elected Youth Advisors, four of which are young women. This is the first time that an election at the world level has resulted in the majority of positions being held by females, which demonstrates support for the Strategic Priotity of involving girls, boys, women and men in all levels of decision making in Scouting.

World Scouting Launches World Environment Education Programme at Korea Conference

Jeju Island, Korea - 14 July 2008: Scouts from all over the world have traveled to Jeju Island, Korea to attend the 38th World Scouting Conference, which begins today. During this ‘General Assembly’ of Scouting – taking place from July 14 – 18 – delegates of all National Scout Organizations will discuss and decide on a wide range of topics and projects important to Scouting. Among these topics is the launch of the new World Scout Environment Programme developed with support of the Alcoa Foundation.

European Scout Committee presents Annual Review

During a meeting of the European Scout Region at the 38th World Scout Conference in Jeju, Korea, the European Scout Committee took the opportunity to present its Annual Review covering the period from June 2007 to June 2008.

Score! Soccer the Scout way: ARO receives 200 balls thanks to UEFA

NAIROBI – On Friday 11 July 2008, the ARO (Africa Regional Office) received 200 soccer balls, thanks to the kind gesture of Mr. Per Omdal, Vice- President of UEFA. In a brief but colourful ceremony, the CEO of Alive and Kicking Kenya, Mr. Barnard Martin, on behalf of UEFA, handed over the balls to the Regional Office.

Indonesian Rover died after reaching Mt. McKinley summit

An Indonesian Rover Scout Pungkas Tri Baruno, 20, showed an enormous display of courage as he bravely reached the summit of Mount McKinley at a height of approximately 20,320 feet in Alaska, USA on 7th July 2008, and minutes after his sweet victory, he breathed his last.

Scout takes part in Junior G8 Summit 2008

Koné Tilomian Danoubié, 17, who is a member of Catholic Scouts of Côte d’Ivoire took part in the Junior G8 summit (J8), which was held in Japan from 1-10 July. He was able to participate thanks to the support of the UNICEF Côte d’Ivoire.

The summit brought together 274 young people between the ages of 14-17 from developing countries, to exchange ideas and share knowledge on issues relating to climate change, poverty, and global health.

Building the right image by sending the right message

Boy Scouts of the Philippines welcomed 58 participants from 12 countries for the regional communications workshop held from 24 to 27 June 2008 in Tagaytay City, Philippines.

Cubs get into learning and fun

The first Brunei Darussalam Cubboree held from 15th to 19th June 2008 at the Scouts Training and Activities Centre was fun and learning for young people ages 7 to 11 years old.

Elected Youth Advisors to the World Scout Committee

Congratulations to Karin Ahlbäck (Finland) and Milena Pecarski (Serbia), both from our Region, on their election as Youth Advisers to the World Scout Committee. Also congratulations to Jaemin Choi (Korea), Kevin Li (Canada), Nadia Soledad Morrone (Argentina), Fernanda Cristina Santos Soares (Brazil) who were also elected.

Congratulations to all who offered themselves for election in a willingness to participate actively in the democratic process.

10th World Scout Youth Forum officially opens!

More than 160 Scouts from over 85 countries have come together at Wonkwang University, Iksan, in Korea, for the first day of the 10th World Scout Youth Forum. Full of energy and enthusiasm, the participants have already begun to share stories and to make new friends.

Cambodia now a member of world organization

The National Association of Cambodian Scouts (NACS) is now a full member of World Scouting family as the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) announced its admission on 1st July 2008.

Côte d’ivoire: Scouts launch “Operation Youth for Clean Cities”

On Saturday 21 June 2008, the President of FIS, that is, Fédération Ivoirienne du Scoutisme (Federation of Ivorian Scouting), Dr. DOUMBIA Gnamakolo, reiterating the need to live in a healthy environment, officially launched the 'Operation Youth for Clean Cities' which will be implemented in two phases. First, in Abidjan, then in the interior cities. This colourful ceremony took place in Attecoubé, one of the four pilot areas, in the presence of the Director General of youth affairs, Mr. Sery Bially, municipal officials, traditional and religious leaders, and presidents of youth movements and associations.

World Scouting membership rises to 160 National Scout Organizations

It is a pleasure to announce the WOSM membership of four National Scout Organizations as from today, 1 July 2008: National Association of Cambodian Scouts (NACS); Association of Scouts of Montenegro; Scouts of Syria; National Organization of Scouts of Ukraine (NOSU). This brings the total number of Member Organizations of WOSM to 160.

A warm welcome into the World Scouting family is extended to all the youth and adult members of these four NSOs. We look forward to their participation at the World Scout Conference in Korea in the coming weeks, where they will receive their membership certificates.

Triennial Report: 2005-2008

Every three years, the governing body of World Scouting meets to evaluate the recent past and consider the future. Since 1922, this sequence of meetings has mapped out the destiny of a unique movement for young people. The projection of the Scout Movement towards the future depends on a universal vision, the legacy of Baden-Powell: to create a better world. One year after the Centenary of Scouting, the World Scout Conference can look towards the horizon with a pioneering spirit and people who know where they are starting from and are moving forward fearlessly to prepare new ground.
