University professor chairing academic gathering in short trousers – have you seen one so far? That is what exactly happened today at the World Scout Jamboree. Dr Eduard Vallory, Director General of the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and autor of the research “Global Citizenship Education: Study of the ideological bases, historical development, international dimension, and values and practices of World Scouting” facilitated the Academic Day and Reception in a T-shirt and short trousers – quite unusual for an academic. But not for a Scout, certainly.

In a unique activity, two representatives from 67 of the contingents to the World Scout Jamboree were taken into Kristianstad and the Regional Parliament of Scania for a simulated United Nations session on Climate change. Based on already prepared position papers from the different countries, the Scouts discussed, negotiated, drafted resolutions and voted upon amendments with unfaltering enthusiasm and dedication.

What would the world be like if designed by Scouts? If you could let your imagine go wild and bring a new species to life, what would it look like? How can we make a difference in our home societies so that we live in a more harmonious world for people and nature?

These are some of the questions being explored by Scouts at workshops being ran by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) as part of the Global Development Village (GDV) at the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden.

Megan is jovial and a good storyteller. Her jamboree ID reads, Megan Lo Wing Shan, from Hong Kong. Although work at the kitchen – where she volunteers – can be frantic, no panic is her maxim. Back at home in Hong Kong, Megan works as a Chinese/English translator and volunteers as a Cub Scout Leader.

It’s official. All the food garbage from the 22nd World Scout Jamboree can produce enough gas to drive a car nine times around the world! In 1519 when Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastián Elcano undertook to circumnavigate the world, it was a suicidal mission. In fact, Magellan lost his life, along the way.
