Better environment starts with us – says Scout Naguib Singer from Lebanon

20. mar 2013

"We belong to the Scout Federation of Lebanon which is the first Arab Scout Association specialised in the field of environment", declares lawyer Naguib Singer aged 35 years old, adding that “young Scouts are extremely positive about improving the conditions of the environment, especially places in which we live. I can say we are similar in thoughts to every Scout association in the Arab Region. In each activity, we raise a slogan to motivate everyone and we work together to achieve it as our environmental campaigns have double dimensions; the first one being practical real life solutions and the other which is cultural".
“We have noted that forests and tree cover in and around the town of Kaftin (north of Lebanon) suffered from garbage dumps and had been subject to unplanned shearing and logging. Murad Ghaboshy, Secretary General of the Federation of Lebanese Scouts and one of the leading environmentalists in Lebanon, added that visitors and tourists come to the forests for rest and relaxation but leave behind litter in plastic bags not aware of the ensuing risks and damage to the environment there. So, we are keen to intensify environmental awareness in order to maintain the natural wealth in our forests.”

“Twenty Rovers and Girl Guides walked from the port towards Kaftin town to participate in a campaign, which kicked off the morning of February 3rd, 2013. They cleaned up the forest and increased awareness, amongst families living in the vicinity, about the importance of forests, but they also worked to clean up the area during their presence there leaving the place better than it was.”
