Information Technology workshops at the Irish National Jamboree
15. Ago 2008
Inspired by the programme run jointly by the World Scout Bureau and IBM UK at the 21st World Scout Jamboree last summer, it was decided to provide young Scouts with a technology focused programme activity at this year's Irish National Jamboree.
This is the second time Scouts and IBM have joined together to deliver a technology focused programme at an event for young Scouts. During the World Scout Jamboree in the UK, Scouts were given the possibility to take part in an Open Source Academy to get a hands-on experience with Free and Open Source Software. The programme activities at both Jamborees were supported by IBM volunteers and staff from the World Scout Bureau.
In the Jamtech zone at the Irish Jamboree, Scouts built their own LEGO® robots, played a virtual environment game and challenged themselves in a sports game. After dinner, leaders and staff were invited to a series of introductory workshops on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) for Scouts.
10 000 Scouts attended the Irish National Jamboree from 2-10 August 2008, celebrating 100 years of Scouting in the Republic of Ireland. Each day addressed a different theme and was filled with activities and shows. Despite some very heavy rain, the Jamboree was a great success.
