The 9th Euro-Arab Gathering in Algeria

Fifty scout leaders from European and Arab Scout Organizations met in the Algerian capital during the period 24-28/5/2011 to participate in the 9th Euro-Arab Gathering. Twenty one European and Arab Scout Organizations were represented in the Gathering namely; Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritania, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Finland, UK and Greece.
The participants are chairmen of scout organizations, international commissioners and members of the Regional and World Scout Committees.

It is worth mentioning that the Gathering was held under the auspices of H.E. Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President of Algeria. During the sessions of the Gathering, the participants discussed a number of important issues raised on the international arena mainly; youth empowerment, cultural dialogue, Arab and European co-operation, partnership between Arab and European Scout Organizations and mutual training courses on youth program and educational material.

The Gathering has also witnessed contributions by some national and international agencies and institutions which support scouting work in society. In this vein, the Department of Prisons in Algeria raised the topic of prisoners' integration in society, the Algerian Ministry of Youth and Sports presented its role in protecting youth from drugs. In addition, the role of the Ministry of Environment in environmental preservation and US Embassy's impetus to cultural dialogue were also highlighted. The British Council raised the topic "effective citizenship" and UN Bureau explained the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Red Crescent discussed volunteerism and human assistance during natural disasters.

The participants agreed on supporting Euro-Arab co-operation in the light of the recent developments in the Arab and European Regions.

The Gathering has been a great chance to celebrate the National Day of the Algerian Scouting and the 70th anniversary of leader/ Mohamed Bouras (founder of the Algerian Islamic Scouting) with Arab and European presence.
