Cycling to the Jamboree in Sweden, from Uganda!

1st Jan 2011

NAIROBI – On Monday 20 June 2011, a group of 11 Ugandan Scouts arrived at the World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office on bicycles. They left Uganda on Tuesday 14 June 2011. They were on transit to Sweden, in order to be part of the 22nd World Scout Jamboree. “We will fly to Italy. From there, we will cycle through Switzerland, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and finally to Sweden”, explained the group leader, John Bosco Balongo.

NSOs in the above European countries have planned to meet them along their itinerary so as to facilitate their camping and other logistical arrangements. The theme of this expedition is “Cycling for Peace and safe Environment for all”.

The initial idea was to conduct the whole expedition on land, but given the prevailing insecurity in the northern part of Africa, it was decided to conduct part of the journey by air.

During a courtesy meeting with the Regional Director, Mr. Frederic Tutu Kama-Kama, he congratulated the team and urged them to continue being good ambassadors of Scouting in Africa. "Since you are the first team to do this, you will be called upon to share the experience with other youth in Africa." He also invited them to think of a similar exercise for the Africa Scout Day in Angola in March 2012, "If you can go to Sweden by bicycle, why not do the same for Angola?", he said.

The journey that will take one and a half months is reminiscent, and in fact a sequel of a similar adventure last year, when two members of this team, Kasujja Asaph and Pwire Ronald, cycled 750 Km, from Kampala to Nairobi so as to attend the World Scout Moot.
