World Scout Centre welcoming refugees

The following is a message from Kandersteg International Scout Centre

We at the World Scout Centre are deeply saddened by the conflict in Ukraine and the resulting destruction and pain being inflicted on our international Scout family.

Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) was founded in the Swiss Alps to promote international friendship, and we continue to stand up for peace, justice and human rights, doing what we can to support the victims of the war.

Over the years at KISC, we have welcomed many ex-staff, members and guests from Ukraine, all of whom have been impacted by this invasion. This includes Yehor, one of our current members of Short-Term Staff. “I am very worried,” he said, “I’m always in touch with my family and loved ones. There are Scout families who are on the territorial defence and who are volunteering. Some, unfortunately, have had to leave their homes. Being in Kandersteg, I am doing my best to help.”

No one should be forced to leave their home or live in fear, which is why KISC is opening its doors to Scouts, Guides and their friends and family, displaced by the war in Ukraine. Those looking for safety, peace and comfort are welcome to stay in the Home of Scouting.

In past conflict, our founder Baden-Powell turned KISC into a refuge; we now follow in his footsteps.

KISC is so grateful that people in need are already turning to us for support and shelter. We are proud to be in a position where we can help others and humbled by the risk some have taken to reach us.

Currently, it’s free for refugees of Ukraine to travel by train in Switzerland. For information on how to reach KISC, please visit our Travelling to KISC page.

If you know a Scout or Guide in need, please share this information with them. You can contact sdd@kisc.ch if you or someone you know is seeking shelter in Switzerland due to the war in Ukraine.
