Confirmation has been received from the Guinness World Records that the most people wearing paper hats is 3,045 and was achieved by SCOUTS New Zealand in Manfeild Park, Feilding, New Zealand, on 1 January 2014.
SCOUTS New Zealand broke this record at their 20th New Zealand Scout Jamboree, which occurs every three years, and includes scouts and leaders from New Zealand, Cook Islands, Australia, Korea, Solomon Islands, Indonesia, Tonga, Samoa and Hong Kong. The previous record was 2226.
The challenge was tackled at the jamboree site in Feilding, with 3054 Scouts taking part. The result was not confirmed by Guinness World Records until they had received documentation and video proof.
"This is an exciting result for our Scouts," said assistant camp chief-youth Hayley Thompson. "As Jamboree only occurs every three years, using this opportunity to attempt a new Guinness record is a real highlight."
