Community Tree Planting

29th May 2014

As part of a broader community effort, the 19th Galway-Athenry Cub Scouts help plant 9,300 trees in and around Athenry during March, 2013. The tree planting has been carried out in order to landscape a number of new and existing roads in and around the town. The group has subsequently monitored the progress of the trees (95% survival) and has in the last months assisted the organising group (Athenry Tidy Towns) in clearing the trees of grass and other weeds that restrict their growth. This has entailed clearing space around the base of the trees so that they have full exposure to sunlight. The efforts have been great as the scouts have had to fight against biting insects and any number of stinging nettles and thistles - all completed with a laugh and steely determination. The project is ongoing.
