19.5. National Scouting Day –Scouts helping Slavonija
- Scout helping hand for regions that are affected by floods
May 19th Croatian Scouts celebrate as the National Scouting Day; on that day Scout organisation was renewed in Croatia after the World War Two. This year we have celebrated this day by helping others – people in the regions affected by floods.
Scout troops all over Croatia started collecting aid for the population in the regions that are affected by floods. We are very proud of our members from Scout troops in Novska, Slavonski Šamac, Otok and Vinkovci who were involved in the construction of flood barriers near their hometowns.
In only one day (Sunday the 18th) around twenty Scout troops from all over Croatia raised over 10.000 HRK for the purchase of hygiene supplies, food and supplies for babies. The first shipment of aid was on the way to Otok near Vinkovci on Sunday evening, and was delivered to primary school “Josip Lovretić", to people evacuated from Gunja and villages near by. Gathering of the help and buying the supplies was organized by Scout Association of Croatia and Scout Association of Zagreb. In the next few days Scout troops from Scout Association of Zagreb gathered over four tons of different supplies for Slavonia.
From Monday the 19th Scout association of Split started humanitarian action „Scouts of Split for Slavonija“. By now they raised over six ton of clothes, food water and other supplies, that they delivered to Slavonia and one part of that supplies was delivered to town of Zenica in Bosnia and Hecegovina.
Scouts from Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Garešnica, Dugi Rat, Osijek and other parts of Croatia are actively involved in raising donations and volunteering in gathering and delivering aid in the regions affected by floods.
National Protection and Rescue directorate has called our member to help them in maintaining volunteer camps for members of the Directorate and volunteers who are starting to clean the areas from witch the water has receded.
