AFRICA SCOUT DAY 2014 - Candle Light Vigil - An Initiative of the Africa Scout Youth Advisers

12th Mar 2014

The Africa Scout Day is to celebrate Scouting in Africa. Its spirit is to unite Scouts and to bring the oneness of the Africa Scout Region.
Candle light vigil concept aims to bring about a reflective moment during this year’s celebrations.

Motivation behind the Idea
We read and watch news everyday about our African countries facing problems every day.
Right now we have the protracted conflicts in Central African Republic, Civil War in South Sudan with brother’s turning against each other, Famine threatening North of Kenya and the Sahel, instability in parts of DRC just to mention but a few. Something needs to be done. We as Scouts can actually do something!

Objectives
In solidarity as Africa’s Scouts we call upon every Scout in Africa to light a peace candle during the Africa Scout Day on 13th March night, have a moment of silence and whisper prayers to the Almighty God to restore nations in Africa and the world. We suggest that we dedicate 8.00pm your local time for this initiative.

With the cliché “Africa Rise” instead let’s look at the examples of where Africa is not merely emerging but leading by positive examples.

Next Steps
Scouts are then encouraged to share photos on social medias, email, africa@scout.org
This is to enable the stories to be consolidated and shared with Scouts all over the world.

Conclusion
This act will show our solidarity and oneness, give a spirit of belonging to our brothers and sisters in those various countries.

A great moment for Scouts of Africa to reflect and turn the flames from their candles into burning desire to continuously strive to positively change their communities embracing the culture of peace and dialogue
