Scouts meet UN Secretary-General's Envoy of Youth at Climate Meeting
20. نوفمبر 2013
COP19/CMP9 - Jörn Becker, Ana Ferreira and Nhattan Nguyen, members of the World Scouting delegation, got an opportunity to meet with UN Secretary-General's Envoy of Youth Mr Ahmad Alhendawi at the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP19 taking place in Warsaw, Poland. The UN Secretary-General has identified working with and for young people as one of his top priorities during his second term, and as a step towards achieving this Mr Ahmad Alhendawi was appointed the first ever Envoy of Youth to advocate for addressing the development needs and rights of young people.
At the COP19 Conference, Mr Alhendawi stressed the key roles that young people and youth organisations such as Scouting play in the work towards creating a sustainable future. He identified youth involvement and education as two important areas, alongside the creation of green jobs when fighting youth unemployment. Scouting encourages young people to think in terms of environmental sustainability from a young age, and through initiatives such as the Scouts of the World Award, the World Scout Environment Programme and Messengers of Peace, World Scouting has sought to strengthen Scouting's commitment to environmental issues.
The COP19/CMP9 Climate Conference will continue until 22 November, with a number of workshops and seminars on different matters relating to sustainable development. For more information, please visit the event website www.cop19.gov.pl
