Nhattan Nguyen (Association des Scouts du Canada) - 19 years old
Joint Coordinator for the WOSM Delegation to COP19
The recent typhoon in the Philippines left horrendous damages to the country, with estimates of over 10,000 deaths. As the United Nations COP19 Climate Change Conference (http://scout.org/node/20251) in Warsaw, Poland, for the next two weeks, I am proud to be a part of the WOSM delegation to this conference.
Passionate about human rights, social justice and sustainable development, I am currently studying International Development and International Relations. Climate change affects human rights on many issues, from access to clean water to food security as we see now after the typhoon in the Philippines. Scouts have responded quickly to the disaster (http://scout.org/node/20403) and I am eager to support our Movement’s participation in avoiding and preparing for such disasters in the future through this conference.
I come to COP19 as a continuation of my volunteer work as an External Youth Representative for WOSM in topics of sustainable development. My experience in this topic also includes participation with the World Scout Delegation to the UN Rio+20 Summit on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro last year, as well as coordinating the Major Group of Children and Youth for the United Nations Environment Program. With this baggage, I am eager to support our team’s strategy at COP19.
Outside of my busy engagement with the UN and Scouting, cycling, meditation and family time are some of my other joys in life.
Stay tuned on scout.org for news by the team, our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/WosmAtRio20), and follow me on Twitter (@nhattannguyen) for updates on COP19!
