Sunrise on Mont Blanc

1st Aug 2007

At 1:30, Wednesday 1st August, the alarm-clock rang!

After a short night, the day started with breakfast in the Gouter shelter (3787m) and at 2:30, the 9 strong roped party, lit by the nearly full moon, started their climb to the summit.

François Viret and Patrick Gabarou coordinated the 8 mountain guides. Along the route the group started to suffer from nausea and headaches, but they kept going.

In spite of the freezing cold, their motivation and good humour never failed, and even when some advanced at a slower pace, the roped party waited so that this special occasion could be shared together.

Around 5:30 they arrived at Valot, and stopped to share a well-deserved sandwich. The shelter looked a bit like a metal spaceship!

At 7:15 they arrived at the summit, 4810m! The view was incredible and even though it was really cold, they stayed smiling to enjoy the moment when Jean-François Vilfroy made his personal Promise, officially engaging in the Movement as a Scout Leader.

Finally, at 8:00, like millions of other Scouts around the world, all of the members of the team renewed their Scout Promise on the summit of Mont Blanc, France.

They then quickly started the climb down, their heads full of amazing views and memories. They arrived at 10:15 at the Gouter shelter, and then returned to Bellevue.

Congratulations to the team for this amazing achievement, and to all those who supported them.
