The Peace Caravan has arrived in Dakar!

1st Aug 2007

30 young Scouts from the Eclaireuses et Eclaireurs de France left Bécours on 1st August 2007, and after twenty-four days travelling across Spain, Morocco and Mauritania, they arrived in Saint Louis du Sénégal and met up with fellow Scouts from Senegal, Togo and Benin who had travelled across West Africa to join them.

On 27th July it was time to start the final key stage of the project. Around 120 Scouts and Guides gathered in the auditorium of the Dakar Management and Training Centre for the opening of the Francophone Forum for Peace.

Following the opening and first inputs given by key speakers, the two caravans met at the pier to take the boat to Gorée, the martyred island of slaves, where so many men and women departed for the 'New World'. The intercultural evening was rich in events: presentations by associations, sampling gastronomic delicacies from each country and entertainment based around the theme of peace.
Over the course of two days, the Scouts and Guides from the North and the South worked to build a better world with cooperation and international solidarity at the heart of all debates. A round table discussion was held on the relation between peace and development, health and environment, workshops were run on peace and intercultural relations. The forum ended on Thursday 30th August 2007 with the drawing up of a Declaration by Young Francophones on Education for Peace which will be sent to the World Organization of the Scout Movement, World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and to International Organisations.
