Drink driving is a major cause of road death and serious injury together with speeding, distracted driving and failure to wear seat belts. Young people are the most affected since road crashes are the leading cause of deaths for ages 15-29, 2nd for 5-14 and 3rd for 30-44 years.
RSI Panos Mylonas has worked very hard over the last eight years, leading actions and campaigns to raise awareness and protect life on the roads in Greece and Europe and indeed globally . The Hellenic Road Safety Institute RSI Panos Mylonas is currently organising the European Night Without Accidents coordinating more than 540 volunteers in 39 night clubs in 21 cities. The Scouts of Greece are joining us tonight so that together we can spread the message of the designated driver, promoting responsible behaviour and encouraging positive role models for youth.
As President of RSI and mother of Panos whose tragic and unfair loss was through the irresponsible behaviour of others, I feel challenged and moved with the response of our volunteers and with the engagement of the Scouts. Every year the numbers of night clubs supporting our actions in their premises increases. The success of this event is built on the increasing number of volunteers and on the support of the traffic police who provide us with their alcohol test devices for the night in order to carry out a "friendly" alco-test for drivers in the area that they come to for Saturday entertainment.
Peer to peer communication and learning by doing is very important in influencing behaviour. This of course is the Scout method and partnering with Scouting we create the better world for which we all dream. Life is much too beautiful to throw away or to have stolen through irresponsible behaviour and we deserve to enjoy it in health and safety. This Saturday night, as every night, should be enjoyed in safety, for us, for our loved ones, for all of us! Enjoy your night out and never fail to act responsibly on the road, tonight and every night.
