When we taught semaphore flags we used the game of battleship across a soccer (football) field (approximately 100 meters). 1) We made a grid with tape 8x8 and labeled them A to H and 1 to 8. 2) We put a cardboard box in front of the board to block the view. 3) We put a large cardboard battle ship on one of the spots. 4) Then we took turns sending over a guess as to where the ship was by using the flags.. We would send "C" then "5". The other team who flag back "X" or "O" for Hit or miss. 5) If the ship was on the square that was guessed it was a hit and we sank immediately and the other team won the round. Time for a different flag man.
