ETHIOPIA – For a week, 11th to 16th March 2013, Addis Ababa became the capital of Africa Scouting, as Scouts and Scouts leaders from across the continent converged at the Addis Ababa University College of Development Studies for events around the All Africa Scout Day celebrations. The overriding theme for this year celebrations was “Scouts promoting good citizenship and peace”.
As it has been the tradition, 13th March is celebrated across the region as Africa Scout Day and this is a reminder and call to your respective NSOs to make necessary preparations for the celebrations of Africa Scout Day 2013.
KENYA- 16 Rovers came together to form the Masaku Rover group that is located in Machakos, at the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. With the theme ‘Youth, crime and Drugs’, the rovers in conjunction with volunteers from the Ministry of youth organized a peace walk in Machakos town on 17th September 2012. The walk was supported by the Global Veterans of Peace Ambassadors (GLOVEPA) and the Kenya Police.
GITEGA - From 28th July to 5th August 2012, Scouts from over thirty countries gathered at the Bungere Scout camp in Gitega, Burundi for the 6th Africa Scout Jamboree. The opening ceremony was graced by His Excellency, Gervais Rufyikiri, the Second vice president of Burundi. Also in attendance at the opening ceremony were ambassadors from the Democratic Republic of Congo, France, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania, officials from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture in Burundi, members of the Africa Scout Committee and staff from the World Scout Bureau - Africa Regional Office.
LUANDA - From 6th to 9th June 2012 participants from various corners of the world attended the 15th Africa Scout Conference which was successfully hosted by the Angola Scout Association. The event took place at the Futungo de Belas Centre. 29 African NSOs (National Scout Associations) were represented. There were 54 delegates and 12 observers. In addition 21 guests from outside Africa (Europe, Asia-Pacific and Canada) were in attendance. The support team included 7 Africa Scout Committee members and 10 ARO staff members. In total 104 people were at the conference. A colourful opening ceremony that took place in the afternoon of 6th June attracted massive participation. More than 2000 people were in attendance. The guest of honour at the opening ceremony was His Excellency Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, the Vice President of Angola.
KINSHASA – Within the framework of the Messengers of Peace project, the Fédération des Scouts de la République démocratique du Congo (FESCO) launched a new youth program on 6 April 2012. Through this program, the Scout method is used to support street children from a centre known as "Molende na ngai" which means "my perseverance." Today, this centre counts 46 Cubs and 22 Scouts. Their enthusiasm is so compelling that FESCO is now receiving many requests for membership from less affluent areas of Kinshasa.
As we celebrate another milestone in the annals of Africa Scouting, I bring you greetings from the Africa Scout Committee. We are proud and very grateful to our past leaders whose hard work, dedication and commitment to Scouting made their efforts noticeable to the AU (then OAU) as far back in 1995 almost two decades ago.
As we celebrate this year Founder’s Day, I wish to convey my sincere best wishes to all scouts the world over, with a particular attention to the Africa Scout Region.
