Scouting and the Environment

For more than 100 years, Scouting has helped young people to connect with the outdoors, learn from nature and care for the environment. From identifying ways to reduce water consumption in Australia, educating communities on recycling in Mexico, reducing carbon emissions in Southern Africa, protecting forests from wildfire in France, to planting trees and undertaking clean up campaigns across the globe, Scouts around the world are taking positive action to tackle the environmental problems facing us.

In this respect and in order to continue keeping its motto of “creating a better world” World Scouting has developed programmes and educational material that help not only in raising awareness of the environment we live in. A recent example material developed is the Climate Change Take Action Now climate guide, which is “ a guide to supporting the local actions of children and young people, with a special emphasis on girls and young women” developed together with the Alliance of Youth CEOs. Not forgetting the World Scout Environment Programme which offers tools, resources and initiatives to help Scouts all around the world work together for the good of the local and global environment.

In order to help in delivering its message the Scout Movement has also established Co-operative partnerships and Memorandums of understanding with UN Agencies as well as NGOs such as UNEP, WWF, GCCA (Tck Tck Tck) to name a few and is always looking for new and innovative ways to share Scoutings message such as Mosaic Earth to help develop, promote and deliver these programmes so as to continue its mission and help in the struggle to preserve our fragile ecosystems.

In order to share your stories some of which will be showcased on scout.org feel free to consult our dedicated pages to World Scouting and the Environment

About Mosaic Earth
TckTckTck partnered with OneWorld UK to create mosaic:EARTH - a collaborative online photo/video media project using “deep zoom” technology. It’s a high resolution composite image of the Earth as seen from space, but made up of thousands of “tiles” – photos and videos from TckTckTck (GCCA) partners, individuals, and green businesses that show the diversity of our collective movement. Viewers zoom in and out of the image. Double clicking on particular image and one can read/listen to the individual’s message. It’s easy for individuals to add their own message (no registration required):
