UN Secretary-General received a motion from Finnish Scout youth
Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, received a motion for improving the social position of young people throughout the world. Ban-Ki Moon was visiting Pori, Finland on Friday July 15th to attend a seminar on global sustainability. The motion, named “Youth Peace and Security”, was presented to the Secretary-General and Finnish president Tarja Halonen by an 18-year-old Scout, Evalena Böling. The motion was co-signed by the Finnish Youth Cooperation organization Allianssi and the UN Association of Finland.
Evalena Böling found that Ban Ki-Moon was in agreement with the need to ensure the worldwide equal treatment of young people.
“I discussed the motion with the Secretary-General and he professed to being glad that the social position of the young has been raised into limelight. He stated that the future of the world is in the hands of the youth, and therefore he wishes to meet and involve young people in his work for the UN.”
The “Youth Peace and Security” motion states that half of the population of the world is under the age of 30. Therefore it is totally relevant that young people experience equal and just treatment by the society and view themselves as socially empowered enough to make a change.
Also, youth organizations around the world are a crucial channel through which young people can make themselves heard, make a change and do something meaningful with their time. World Scouting and World Guiding reach over 40 million young people and have a huge empowering impact on the lives of the young on a worldwide scale.
