WOSM-funded school in Kashmir inaugurated
The second school built and funded by the Tsunami Scout Aid Fund (TSAF) was inaugurated on 27 May 2008 in the presence of Regional Director Abdullah Rasheed after it was hugely destroyed by the strong earthquake that hit Pakistan in October 2005.
The school, situated at Bimyar, houses over 300 high school students who are residents of seven villages circling around it. It is one of the two schools that TSAF had provided an assistance for the re-construction which were completed through the work of Scouts and Scout leaders of Srinagar. The first school is in Trikanjan village that was inaugurated in August 2007 and presently caters to a 10-mile belt and has 450 students, some of whom walk as far as three to four kilometers to reach the school.
Both schools are situated at the remote and mountainous areas. During the construction, materials were taken by a trucks only up to a distance and then had to be hand carried up to the school site.
In the past, the district of Uri in Kashmir region had no Scouting at all but with the tremendous work of Scouts, elders, parents and teachers, it has spread out to almost all schools of the sorrounding villages.
After the inauguration ceremony, Regional Director Abdullah Rasheed together with the State Chief Commissioner Mr. N A Khan and other Scout Leaders visited Trikanjan school. It was also known that a land has been allocated for the possible re-construction of the community centre which will be a training centre of Scouts and will be use of other young people in the community.
