UN Environment Programme
The UN Environment Programme provides leadership and encourages partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
World Scouting's official status with UNEP was renewed in 2008 with a Memorandum of Understanding, following an earlier MoU in 2004, which helps support the Scouts' global and local ventures with UNEP.
World Scouting's ventures with UNEP extends beyond specific environmental education projects. The Scouts attended UNEP's Governing Council Meetings in 2008, attended International Childrens and Youth Conferences in 2008 and UNEP supported environmental awareness workshops at the World Scout Jamboree Global Development Village in 2007. Furthermore, in 1990, the two organizations collaborated on and published “Scouting: Action for the Environment”, a document which helps National Scout Organisations (NSOs) integrate environmental education into the overall Scout program.
From water quality testing in Japan, tree planting in Mexico to clean up campaigns in Algeria, Scouts have been involved in a wide range of projects for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) World Environment Day, which is celebrated annually on the 5th of June.
The theme for World Environment Day 2007 is Climate Change, which impacts each and every one of us around the world.
The African Regional Children’s Conference is going to take place in Cameroon, 23-26 July 2007. The conference will bring together children from all parts of Africa to learn about and voice their concern for the environment. About 2-3 children from each African country between 9 and 13 years old will participate in the conference and they will be escorted by their respective chaperons.
Scouts around the world are being called upon to contribute to the planting of 1 billion trees as part of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) 1 Billion Trees Campaign!
Aimed at promoting the many benefits of local tree planting efforts around the world, Scouts are in a prime position to register our current tree planting efforts or take this opportunity to establish a tree planting project in your local community.
Following the ongoing successful partnership between the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of 2004, a renewed MoU has been signed in 2008 to
continue to enhance the opportunities for Scouts and young people at local, national, regional and world levels to engage in environmental education actions.
This partnership between UNEP and WOSM has seen many practical applications, including supporting the World Scout Jamboree and the development of the World Scout Environment Programme, providing opportunities for Scouting to be engaged in the decision making within
UNEP, as well as raising the profile to a world-wide audience of Scouting's many environmental activities through UNEP's Tunza publications, events and campaigns.
