UN-Habitat

The UN Human Settlements Programme is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Through this mandate, UN-HABITAT contributes to the overall objective of the United Nations system to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development. Its partners range from governments and local authorities to a wide international cross-section of Non-Governmental Organisations and civil society groups.

Their common interests, the eradication of poverty and the promotion of sustainable development, have facilitated collaboration between World Scouting and UN-HABITAT. World Scouting enjoys affiliate status with the UN agency. Exchanges between the two organisations are policy driven and based on the international and state levels. World Scouting was actively involved in the 2nd UN Conference on Human Settlements in 1996 and the ongoing Governing Council Meetings in Istanbul.
