Connecting with our Community - Young and Old
31. Jan 2013
In two phases, our Cub Scout Den worked to make a difference to the oldest and youngest members of our community. In the Fall, we planned and hosted a party at a local Nursing Home. The residents loved visiting with our Wolf Cub Scouts and the scouts certainly learned a lot about the residents! Each resident told our scouts a story about his or her life - from serving in a War to traveling around the world to raising up to 10 children! The elderly people and scouts shared some genuine, quality time together as they made a meal, played games, and got to know one another. It was a lesson in the worth of all people to our scouts and a lesson to live life to the fullest. We also laughed a lot together, which is good for everyone's soul!
Later this year, in the Spring, we focused on the youngest needy members of our community. We contacted a local homeless shelter where we knew several children were staying for a time. Our Wolf Cubs collected children's books, toys, and board games to donate to the shelter and to the needy children. While we were not allowed to actually visit the shelter for security reasons, we did talk about the reasons we collected the items. A leader brought our donations and they were most appreciated by the staff and residents at the homeless shelter.
