An agent of change

Fady Malak Saad from Egypt has been recognised by the World Bank as author of one of the top one-hundred essays that addresses the issue of youth as agents of change.

Initiated for the first time in 2004, The World Bank launched its International Essay Competition in order to learn from youth how they can make a difference in reducing poverty.

The World Bank recognises that through their actions and advocacy activities in youth organisations, youth are key agents of change, but too often the nature and impact of their projects is not recognised or documented sufficiently, and youth face difficulties being heard and engaging more directly in civic life.

The Essay Competition 2006 saw more than 1,950 young people from 136 countries submit their essays who were invited to address the following topics and questions:
Education – HIV/AIDS – Conflict – Employment
1.How do you contribute to solving community problems?
2.How do you influence decision-making?

In his paper, Mr Saad analyses some of the current systems of Egypt; the political, economical, and educational systems, in comparison to other developed counties, and identifies two root problems in the nation's systems:
The poor application of modern management and organisation theories.
The lack of properly educated people or poor implementation of skills.

In addressing these issues, he proposes an initiative to develop new generations of young people who would act in the future as Agents of Change. The idea is that they will carry the responsibility of improving the country's systems and run them efficiently within their specific areas of specialty. In order to realise this mission, Fady Malak Saad draws on his experience in the non-formal education sector through his membership and active role in the Scout Movement. He believes that combining a non-formal education system, like Scouting, with the nation's formal organisational system, would provide Egypt's future with new generations of citizens that would act as Agents of Change.
An engineer by trade, Fady volunteers as Egypt's National Coodinator for the Centenary of Scouting and as the Assistant for the Egyptian Scout's International Commissioner.
