World Youth Days in Germany
Düsseldorf, Germany, 18 August 2005 – About 5,000 mainly Catholic Scouts, met yesterday to prepare their participation in the World Youth Days organized this week in Germany.
Before welcoming Pope Benedict XVI they were joined by Eduardo Missoni, Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. They participated in discussion groups and workshops focused on youth issues and spiritual life.
Speaking in several languages, Dr. Missoni called upon them to live their spiritual life within the interreligious framework that the Scout Movement offers. In this way Scouting can help overcome conflicts and nourish a culture of peace, sustaining the development of a better world. This is the essence of the Scout promise.
A spiritual dimension is one of the constitutional fundamentals of the Scout Movement. The International Catholic Conference of Scouting encompasses approximately one-third of Scouting's 28-million members, and the remainder belong to nearly every religion or denomination throughout the world. A significant proportion are Muslim. Interreligious dialogue is an important and valuable aspect of Scoutings educational method.
