Monday, February 28, Steve Fossett took off from Salina, Kansas to begin his journey toward Europe and the Middle East, over Asia and the Pacific, and back to Kansas. The flight is expected to take about 70 hours.

Scouts around the world are proud to see him displaying the World Scout emblem on his plane, and they are cheering him on! Steve is an elected member of the World Scout Committee of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

Geneva, World Scout Bureau, 1st March 2005 -–“I think that each record I break is like earning a new and higher Scout award” Steve Fossett declared recently. He is always keen to underline the importance of Scouting in his life, and his attachment to the Scout Movement, one of the supporters of his latest challenge to circumnavigate the globe alone in about 60 hours.

His main sponsor and partner in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer Challenge, Sir Richard Branson, was also a Scout, in the United Kingdom.

Steve Fossett is an elected member of the World Scout Committee. Like Neil Amstrong, the first man to land on the moon, he too was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

His reserved smile hides an eagerness to set new challenges for himself, serving as an example to the 28 million young people in the Movement founded by Baden-Powell.

Steve Fossett is the patron of the new programme “Scouts of the World”, an initiative to help young people meet the challenges of sustainable development, as identified within the Millennium Declaration of the United Nations.
