The 4th General Assembly of the World Scout Parliamentary Union (WSPU) met in Cairo, Egypt in December. It was attended by 113 participants from 44 countries. A summary report of the event will be available soon.

The "Big 7" youth organizations, with the help of UNICEF, met in Geneva for four days at the end of November to discuss the participation of young people in decision-making.

Globally: The traditional Jamboree on the Air - using amateur radio frequencies - and the newer Jamboree on the Internet are becoming more and more the same. This year, for the first time, some Scouts' radio messages travelled part way via the Internet before returning to the airwaves. And, a new JOTI feature was the ability to talk on the Internet.

"I am now devoting my life to fight AIDS in Africa, especially with young people," declared Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa, when he accepted an award for humanity from the British Red Cross, presented by Jacques Moreillon.

Juillet, 2003 - Le Scoutisme et l'Organisation de lutte contre la lèpre "AHM" travaillent ensemble depuis 20 ans pour lutter contre la lèpre. Les Organisations scoutes de 18 pays au moins travaillent sur le terrain, souvent en partenariat avec l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé. Une brochure de 16 pages, publiée (en anglais) par "Ranga Rao Leprosy Trust" illustre les succès du Scoutisme dans ce domaine. Téléchargeable comme suit:

Juillet, 2003 - Les "Enfants en situation difficile" - c'était le sujet d'un séminaire organisé par la Région Scoute Afrique, à Nairobi, au Kenya, début juin. Le séminaire a réuni 21 participants d'Organisations scoutes de 6 pays d'Afrique de l'Est. Dominique Bénard du Bureau Mondial du Scoutisme était à Nairobi pour co-animer le séminaire, accompagné de deux experts du réseau Ticket pour la Vie, créé pour soutenir le travail avec les enfants vivant dans des conditions difficiles.

Une réunion s'est tenue du 4 au 6 juillet 2003 au BMS, réunissant 8 responsables de la Guilde des Anciens Scouts Afghans en Allemagne (y compris leur chef, le Dr. Said Habib, lequel a été chargé par les autorités afghanes de mobiliser un soutien à l'étranger pour la renaissance du Scoutisme en Afghanistan).
