In 2000, at the United Nations Millennium summit, 189 world leaders signed an historic commitment, the Millennium Declaration and Development Goals. The first main goal is to cut poverty by half by the year 2015. All those goals are summarised in an eight-point roadmap and with just 5 years to the target date, 2010 has been proclaimed as the Millennium Development Goals year by the UN Secretary General. A high-level summit will take place at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The “We can End Poverty 2015” campaign is a highlight of the international year with the aim of informing and engaging citizens in supporting and taking action in the Millennium Development Goals.
