Community-Based Scouting Updates

April 2011

Following up on the Community-Based Scouting (CBS) news in Asia-Pacific Region, we are happy to revert to you with an update on what's coming up. We are always interested to see that initiatives and projects you are conducting in your respective NSO on CBS are showing progress and yielding results. All you have to do is visit the Community-Based Scouting Section on APR website for your learning, sharing and looking forward to see your success.

Community-Based Scouting Co-ordinators
As of now, 22 out of 26 NSOs appointed their Coordinators. The NSOs which lately joined the network are Bangladesh, Cambodia, Japan and Mongolia. We thank all these NSOs for appointing their coordinators and wishing them all the best.

Four NSOs are still remaining to join the Network by appointing their Coordinators. They are Brunei Darussalam, Kiribati, Malaysia and French Polynesia.

Some CBS Echoes

Bhutan Scout Association:" We can call ourselves TRUE Scouts"

Since its establishment in 2009, Community-Based Scouting is carried out in the four troops (Kuenphen, Zhenphen, Raven and Trophen). A two-day adult leaders' workshop on the topic 'Experiential Learning' was carried out on 31st October and 1st November in the multi-purpose hall of the Harmony Youth Village, Thimphu.

The objectives of the training were:

  • To share Scouting knowledge
  • To introduce Scout Method in all learning activities
  • To build team work

The program was designed for 30 participants only, but 46 participants from the four troops of the Bhutan Community-Based Scouting turned up for the program.

The first day focused on the concept of Scouting knowledge and Scout Method on following topics: brief history of Scouting, Scout Law and Promise, fundamental of Scouting, rope work, woodcraft trail signs.

On the second day, the participants used their practical Scouting skills in the hike. It was a challenging and a fun task for them as they had to use the previous day's lesson into practice.

It is expected that these adult leaders who are mostly housewives will be more actively involved in Scouting and will encourage others to join Scouting as volunteers or adult leaders to support Scouting.

Singapore Scout Association: Seniors-in-Scouting Program

Currently more than 350 seniors had been trained to be more involved in Scouting. The programme has contributed to one of the strategic moves of SSA to promote Community Scouting by reaching out to seniors and retirees in order to establish more open groups outside the school-based system.

Seniors-in-Scouting members shared many common activities. They come together regularly for Ukulele practices. The Ukulele team continued to be sought after by the government and various civic organisations to grace their formal occasions including the opening of LTA's circle Line on 4 April, C3A'civic active ageing carnival on 3 April. The team has indeed helped to project the corporate image of SSA and promote the SIS.

Instructed by Mrs Margaret Anderson, one of the long-time dedicated and committed leaders, some 15 seniors have been learning the art of line dancing conducted at SSA. The interest group meet together fortnightly since August 2010.
