Ticket to Life participants from six countries enjoy the camp life

Young people under the Ticket to Life project are all too excited to be a part of the 26th APR Scout Jamboree telling that what they have experienced inside the camp is worth-sharing when they go out. The project focuses on children who live in the street and have no proper home environment or parental support, to receive the benefits of Scouting.

At the Jamboree there are 30 children under the Ticket to Life (TTL) project from Indonesia (1), Mongolia (1), Nepal (1), Pakistan (1), Sri Lanka (1) and Philippines (24) comprised of 19 from Malate council in Manila and 5 from Zamboanga City. This is the first time that children from the project, not only within Philippines but from the six countries got together.

When asked what they think about the Jamboree, with beaming faces, they all said that they love being at the camp and it is wonderful to see people from so many countries smiling and saying hello to each other.

For them it feels like the world is such a small village where everyone knows each other regardless of who you are, what you can do and where you come from.

Joseph White, 11 years old from the Philippines said, he enjoyed the activities at the extreme challenge a lot. He said even though, they have committed lots of errors while doing the activity, but no one resort to blaming, which for him is not a common site in his community environment. He loved the fact that Scouts focus more on fun, learning and building friendship.

Others said they love doing the Scout activities at the aquatics and survivors where they are taught on the importance of discipline in doing their regular chores at home like conserving waters.

Jennifer Flores, 12 years old from Zamboanga City, Philippines said she liked the idea of Jamboree to provide them with the opportunity to meet up with different people from different countries and learn about their culture especially for people like them who have limited opportunity to travel.

When asked what they can share to their families and friends from the Jamboree, they all commented that when they go back home, they will share all the good things they learn and see it as a beginning of their Scouting adventures.

The gathering, in the afternoon of 1st January 2010, was joined by the Regional Director Abdullah Rasheed. Joining them were TTL Coordinators in the Philippines under the Boy Scouts of the Philippines were Ms Sophie Castillo and Mr Art Grino and Syd Castillo from the regional office.

In the discussion, one said that through Scouting he became a better person by turning his back from all his vices and just continue doing Scouting. The Mongolian Scout said that she was happy to be at the Philippines and now has 25 newfound friends both overseas and local Scouts.

The Jamboree both serves as a playground and as a adventure ground where Scouts play and learn at the camp to mold their character that when they go out of the camp they are committed to contribute in making their homes a little better than how they found it.
