The Children's Conference will focus on issues that are the theme of World Environment Day 2007.

UNEP Africa Regional Children's Conference

The African Regional Children’s Conference is going to take place in Cameroon, 23-26 July 2007. The conference will bring together children from all parts of Africa to learn about and voice their concern for the environment. About 2-3 children from each African country between 9 and 13 years old will participate in the conference and they will be escorted by their respective chaperons.

The “Regional Children’s Conference” in Cameroon intends to prepare the children for the “Tunza International Children’s Conference” that is going to take place in Norway, June 2008.

During the “Regional Children’s Conference” the children will discuss and focus on themes concerning Africa. The Conference will be organized by UNEP, UNICEF, UNESCO and the Cameroon Conference Committee.

The Agenda: The main topics of the conference are:

Climate change and food security
Forest and biodiversity (visit to a forest)- The Survival of the Great Apes, the children will learn about the apes (invite a ranger, scientist or other expertise to talk about the apes, showing photos, film etc).
Clean water and sanitation- Learning about the situation in slums and other poor areas due to the lack of water and sanitation. The children will do experiments with water, showing ways to purify and improve the quality of fresh and waste water.
Waste management and recycling - The children will learn about how to reduce, reuse and recycle their personal waste.
Dry lands and Deserts - Information on how to join The Billion Tree Campaign, and the importance of trees to fight land degradation.
