La manière dont le Scoutisme traite les problèmes environnementaux a évolué avec le temps, mais cela reste un domaine fondamental du programme scout.
L'Organisation Mondiale du Mouvement Scout reconnaît l'importance de l'éducation à l'environnement. C'est pourquoi elle se focalise sur le développement de nouvelles initiatives dans ce domaine, en encourageant les scouts à acquérir des compétences et la compréhension nécessaires pour faire face aux défis environnementaux qu'ils rencontreront.

Aujourd'hui, nous pouvons voir des scouts dans le monde entier s'engageant avec leurs communautés locales pour prendre soin de l'environnement de diverses manières. Les scouts australiens ont identifié des moyens pour réduire la consommation d'eau dans les locaux scouts ou à la maison. Les scouts mexicains ont fabriqué la plus grande Fleur-de-Lys au monde à partir de boîtes de conserve, afin d'éduquer leur communauté aux valeurs du recyclage. Les scouts du Canada se sont joints aux scouts d'Afrique du Sud afin d'apprendre à réduire les émissions d'oxyde de carbone et de comprendre les changements climatiques. Les Scouts en France ont protégé les forêts des feux de forêt. Dans le monde entier, de la Turquie au Kenya, en passant par les Etats-Unis, les scouts plantent des arbres et lancent des campagnes de nettoyage pour améliorer leur environnement local et apporter leur contribution à la santé globale de l'environnement.
SCENES (Scout Centres of Excellence for Nature and Environment) is a project of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) aimed at establishing a network of locations throughout the world to strengthen the three fundamental roles of Nature and Environment in Scouting:
- Education through nature and the environment;
- Learning about nature and the environment;
- Action for nature and the environment.
Scouts worldwide, have responded to Gifts for Peace by developing great environmental projects that respond to issues such as sustainable development , reforestation, recycling and conservation.
The UN Environment Programme provides leadership and encourages partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
World Scouting's official status with UNEP was confirmed with the Memorandum of Understanding in 2004, which helps support the Scouts' global and local ventures with UNEP.
World Scouting's ventures with UNEP extends beyond specific environmental education projects. The Scouts attended UNEP's Governing Council Meetings in 2003 and UNEP carried out an environmental awareness workshop at the Global Development Village in 2003. Furthermore, in 1990, the two organizations collaborated on and published “Scouting: Action for the Environment”, a document which helps National Scout Organisations (NSOs) integrate environmental education into the overall Scout program.
