Africa celebrates 13th March - Africa Scout Day

On Thursday 13th March 2008, the Scout fraternity from various corners of Africa, marked the Africa Scout Day. 13th March is a day that was set aside by the Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, OAU – a predecessor of the African Union (AU) – during its 62nd Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia on 21st – 23rd June 1995. This was in recognition of the role of Scouting in educating Africa's youth.

This year's celebrations were conducted under the banner ''Scouting for Peace in Africa''. Activities ranged from blood donation, community service, walks, media discussions, games, tree planting etc. Some of the NSOs activities attracted media attention. For instance, Kenya Scouts Association's Africa Scout Day celebrations were covered in the The People on Sunday, 16th March on the back page.

The World Scout Bureau Staff, Africa Office in Nairobi, conducted a community service exercise at the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa's Home of the destitute children in Langata, Nairobi, Kenya from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm. This is a centre that shelters children with mental and physical disabilities. They participated in the cleaning of the centre; helped with the laundry and feeding the children. Moreover, they also made a donation of foodstuffs and items of clothing.

The Main Goal of this year's celebration was to Raise Awareness about the Africa Scout Day, while preaching peace in Africa at the same time
